October 2004, Dortmund and Dusseldorf

Pictures of cargo traffic on the River Rhine passing through Dusseldorf, and some other views of the city.

The current here is very strong, and the river bends quite sharply. Boats here pass starboard-to-starboard (why? *), and the use of blue flags (boards) to signal this intention can be clearly seen in some of the pictures. (* I guess that the downstream boats prefer the inside of the bend to ensure they have space to swing the stern round the sharp bends.)
